Government Launches Database, Escrow System to Tackle Unscrupulous Builders

The government is set to launch a new initiative next month designed to curb the activities of rogue builders and enhance consumer confidence in the home improvement sector. The scheme will introduce a publicly accessible database of approved tradespeople, allowing consumers to verify credentials before commissioning work.

Alongside the directory, a financial protection system will be implemented. This mechanism will secure customers' payments in an independent escrow account, releasing funds to builders only upon the satisfactory completion of agreed project milestones. This aims to prevent scenarios where consumers lose money to unfinished or substandard work.

Housing Secretary Michael Gove stated the measures would empower consumers and drive up standards within the construction industry, following long-standing criticism regarding inadequate regulation and redress for victims of building fraud. The move signals a concerted effort to address pervasive issues that have reportedly cost homeowners millions of pounds annually.
