Green Deputy Rachel Millward Targets Water Privatisation After Years of Underinvestment
Rachel Millward, the Green Party Deputy Leader, has sharply criticised the state of the UK's water system, labelling it a "disaster." She asserted that privatised water companies have engaged in "radical underinvestment" over many years, leading to systemic failures and environmental harm across the country.
Speaking on the issue, Ms Millward outlined the Green Party's policy to nationalise water companies. This move, she argued, would allow for the necessary public investment to modernise infrastructure, curb pollution, and ensure the reliable delivery of water services. The Green Party maintains that private ownership prioritises profit extraction over public good and environmental stewardship.
This intervention highlights a significant policy split between the Greens and the current government, which continues to support the privatised model for water utilities. The debate over nationalisation versus private operation for critical services remains a contentious point in British political discourse, particularly as concerns about environmental degradation and service quality persist.
