Greens Propose Two-Year Public Sector Job Guarantee for Unemployed Under-24s
The Green Party has unveiled a new policy initiative at its conference, proposing a guaranteed two-year public sector job for every unemployed person under the age of 24. Co-deputy leader Mothin Ali stated the programme would address the widespread feelings of boredom, desperation, and disorientation reported by many young people.
Ali emphasised that the estimated £10bn cost of the scheme would be offset by savings from reduced crime, improved public health, and enhanced tax revenue. This economic rationale frames the proposal as a sound investment rather than a mere expenditure.
The party also affirmed its commitment to a universal basic income, alongside a significant increase in social housing provision. These measures reflect a broader strategy to tackle economic precarity and inequality, which the Greens contend are systemic issues exacerbated by current government policies.
