Ground Zero Team Identifies Two More 9/11 Victims Through Advanced DNA

New York City's medical examiner has successfully identified two more victims of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre. Dorothy Morgan, of Hempstead, Long Island, and a man whose identity is being withheld at his family's request, bring the total number of identified victims to 1,649. This leaves 1,092 individuals, approximately 40% of those killed, yet to be formally identified.

These identifications, the first since September 2023, underscore the persistent work of forensic scientists. The process relies on ever-improving DNA sequencing technology, which can now analyse samples previously deemed too degraded. Officials have collected more than 22,000 human remains from Ground Zero, many of which are minute fragments. The medical examiner's office states it is committed to identifying every victim, a pledge reiterated annually.

The remains are frequently subjected to retesting as technology evolves. This methodical approach provides some measure of closure for families, though many have waited decades.
