Guam Residents Evacuated as Super Typhoon Bavi Approaches with 160mph Winds
Guam has commenced widespread evacuations ahead of Super Typhoon Bavi, which is anticipated to bring winds of over 160 miles per hour and waves nearing 11 metres when it strikes the island. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre officially designated Bavi as a 'super typhoon' earlier today, noting its rapid intensification.
Residents in low-lying coastal areas and flimsy structures have been directed to seek refuge in government-run shelters, with officials cautioning against the storm's severe potential. Public services, including schools and non-essential government offices, have ceased operations.
The Western Pacific island, a US territory, frequently experiences tropical storms, yet Bavi's projected intensity marks it as a significant threat. The US military maintains a substantial presence on Guam, critical for projecting power across the Pacific, and has also activated emergency protocols for its personnel and assets.
