International Court Rules UK Not Liable for Rwanda Asylum Deal Payments After Starmer Cancellation
An international court in the Netherlands has delivered a judgement favouring the United Kingdom, exempting it from millions in payments to Rwanda stemming from a defunct asylum agreement. The Rwandan government had initiated legal proceedings, claiming the UK had violated the terms of the deal and seeking damages exceeding £100 million.
The controversial agreement, established by the previous Conservative administration, was designed to transfer asylum seekers who had arrived in the UK via irregular means to Rwanda. However, Keir Starmer’s government swiftly cancelled the arrangement upon taking power.
During the three-day hearing, legal representatives for the UK contended that the plan's abandonment was an 'entirely logical' consequence of Labour's electoral victory. They argued it was 'simple common sense' that no further financial commitments would be due given the political shift and subsequent cancellation of the policy.
