Joanne Shaw Died in Frenchay Explosion After Ex-Partner Forced Entry with Device
Joanne Shaw, 35, died in a house explosion in Frenchay, Bristol, on Sunday, which authorities are treating as a homicide. Her ex-partner, Ryan Kelly, 41, also died in the blast, with police confirming no other suspects are being sought.
Shaw's family stated her actions were "nothing short of heroic," describing how she ensured her child's safety by sending them outside just moments before the fatal explosion. They highlighted her "boundless" love for her child, calling her a "devoted and loving mother."
Police received an initial call at 06:17 BST regarding a domestic incident at the Sterncourt Road property, where a known man had reportedly forced entry. By 06:30, the intruder was believed to possess an explosive device, with the blast occurring approximately two minutes later. Three other individuals, including a child, sustained minor injuries.
The family's statement remembered Shaw's "infectious laugh" and her capacity for forming "eternal friendships," emphasising she would be remembered for her "bravery, her protective instinct, and the ultimate sacrifice she made for others."
Avon and Somerset Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to prior contact with the victim regarding earlier reported domestic incidents.
