Kyiv Registers Record Air Raid Alerts as Russian Forces Intensify Attacks

Kyiv registered a record 58 air raid alerts in May, with Russian forces maintaining an almost continuous bombardment of the Ukrainian capital. The intensified attacks, primarily employing drones and missiles, have significantly impacted the city’s infrastructure and civilian routines.

The sustained aerial campaign has forced Kyiv’s metro stations to double as round-the-clock shelters. Public transport operations have faced frequent suspensions, and air defence systems are consistently active.

City authorities have issued directives for schools and kindergartens to operate on a hybrid model, combining online and in-person learning, contingent on the security situation. Businesses have also been compelled to adjust working hours and practices to accommodate the persistent threat.

These intensified assaults follow earlier Western policy decisions to supply advanced weaponry to Ukraine, framed as necessary for defending against Russian aggression. The material reality, however, sees a protracted conflict in which civilians disproportionately bear the brunt, whilst Western arms manufacturers secure lucrative contracts.
