Kyle O'Callaghan Jailed for Ten and a Half Years Over Ebbw Vale Wetherspoons Killing
Kyle O'Callaghan, 30, has received a ten-and-a-half-year custodial sentence for the manslaughter of Marcus Carpenter, 37, following an altercation outside The Picture House pub in Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent.
Carpenter succumbed to his injuries in hospital four days after the attack, which occurred in February. The court was informed that O'Callaghan, who pleaded guilty, struck Carpenter with such force that it caused his head to 'snap backwards'.
Judge Daniel Williams characterised O'Callaghan's actions as an act of 'selfish, mindless violence', noting that he subsequently dragged Carpenter's 'lifeless body without an ounce of care, concern or dignity' before absconding from the scene. A £10,000 Crimestoppers appeal led to O'Callaghan's arrest days later as he attempted to evade capture.
A post-mortem examination determined Carpenter suffered a hypoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest, and brain bleeding. His family described him as a 'beloved son, partner and dad' with 'the kindest of hearts'.
O'Callaghan's criminal record includes 21 prior offences, among them assaults with a chained dog lead and a glass, and public possession of knives. Judge Williams underscored the 'fatal and sickening blow' delivered by O'Callaghan, which 'caused unimaginable grief' to Carpenter's family. The sentence includes an additional four-year extended licence period upon his release.
