Laos Flooded Cave: Rescued Gold Prospectors Aid Search for Two Missing Men
Survivors from the flooded cave in central Xaysomboun province are providing critical intelligence to rescue teams as operations continue to locate two remaining gold prospectors.
The men, all local villagers, entered the narrow cave system on 20 May. Flash floods subsequently blocked their exit, trapping seven individuals.
Five men have now been rescued. Reports indicate that four men freed themselves on Saturday after water levels receded, though the cause of this reduction is unclear. A Japanese rescue diver, Yoshitaka Isaji, confirmed that floodwater was being drained, but a broken pump had temporarily hindered access to a passage used in earlier rescue efforts.
From their hospital rooms, several survivors are advising on the cave's deeper sections, including precise descriptions of the labyrinthine tunnels, some as narrow as 50cm (20in). A Laotian rescue organisation has described this information as 'substantial', integrating it into a new search strategy expected to launch imminently.
International specialist divers from Thailand, Indonesia, France, and Australia are collaborating in the complex rescue operation. The first man was extracted by rescuers on Friday.
