Lord O'Neill Declines Manchester Economic Adviser Role, Supports Devolution
Lord O'Neill, the former chief economist for Goldman Sachs, has confirmed he will not be taking up any official government appointments. This includes a prospective role as chief economic adviser to the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, a position he had been tipped for.
Despite declining a formal post, Lord O'Neill expressed his continued support for the Prime Minister's agenda on regional devolution. He emphasised the necessity of devolving powers and resources away from Westminster, stating it is crucial for addressing the UK's economic imbalances. Lord O'Neill indicated his willingness to offer informal advice and contribute to policy discussions from outside government structures.
His previous work includes chairing the Treasury's review into antimicrobial resistance. The decision not to join Mr Burnham's team means the Greater Manchester Combined Authority will need to consider other candidates for the influential economic advisory position.
