Los Alamos Laboratory Worker Melissa Casias Identified in New Mexico Forest Remains
New Mexico state police have confirmed that human remains found in Carson National Forest on 28 May belong to Melissa Casias, an administrative assistant at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ms Casias, 53, was reported missing in June of last year.
Investigation Continues into Casias' Death
A hiker discovered the remains, along with a handgun, in an area previously searched. New Mexico's Office of the Medical Investigator identified the body, but the cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Her family stated, "This is a lot to process, our hearts are heavy and we fully intend to continue to pursue answers for justice."
Ms Casias, who worked at the laboratory involved in defensive nuclear research and the development of the first atomic weapons, was last seen after visiting her daughter. Her personal belongings, including her purse, identification, and mobile phones, were found at her home, prompting welfare concerns.
Disinformation Circulates Around US Scientists' Deaths
Her disappearance became a prominent feature in an online conspiracy theory suggesting a connection between the deaths and disappearances of at least 10 individuals with ties to US scientific research. This theory posited that their work was linked to their fates, despite refutations from family members providing details about the actual circumstances of these deaths.
For instance, one individual died from heart disease, another in an apparent suicide following the sudden deaths of both parents. In a separate case, a neighbour faces murder and burglary charges. These family accounts have been largely ignored by proponents of the conspiracy, compounding their grief with unfounded speculation.
