Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Advances to November Run-Off Election for City's Leadership
Incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass has advanced to the November run-off election to determine who will lead Los Angeles. With votes still being tallied, Bass was projected as the first candidate to secure a place, though her opponent is yet to be definitively identified.
The second spot could go to either fellow Democrat Nithya Raman, a city council member, or Republican newcomer and reality television personality Spencer Pratt. The successful candidate will preside over the United States' second-largest city, contending with issues such as widespread homelessness and the scarcity of affordable housing, all while Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Olympic Games.
Bass, with 35% of the vote from 63% counted, has faced criticism for her handling of the January 2025 Palisades Fire, which destroyed thousands of homes and resulted in 12 fatalities. This incident has been described as one of California's most destructive fires on record, and the city's response has drawn significant condemnation.
Pratt, a registered Republican, launched his mayoral campaign on the anniversary of this wildfire, which devastated his own home. He has consistently criticised Bass's management of the fire and the overall state of Los Angeles, advocating for mandatory drug treatment to address homelessness.
Raman, an urban planner and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, entered the race unexpectedly. Her platform focuses on expanding affordable housing, reducing homelessness, and revitalising Hollywood's job market, arguing that Bass has not adequately addressed these issues.
The Los Angeles mayoral election is part of a series of primaries across California, Iowa, New Jersey, and New Mexico, which will shape the broader midterm elections later this year. California's "jungle primary" system allows the top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, to advance to the general election if no candidate secures an outright majority in the primary.
