Malaysian Teen Acquitted of Schoolgirl Murder Due to Insanity Defence

A Malaysian court has acquitted a 15-year-old boy charged with the murder of a 16-year-old schoolgirl, accepting a defence based on mental unsoundness. The High Court in Kuantan ruled that the prosecution had not disproved the defence's claim that the boy was suffering from insanity at the time of the incident.

The ruling follows the death of the girl, identified as Nur Afiah Fasihah Muhammad Zaini, nearly a year ago. Her body was discovered with multiple stab wounds in the living room of her family home in Felda Panching Selatan, Kuantan. The killing had provoked significant public discourse across Malaysia, particularly concerning the societal implications of social media.

Under the order of Justice Zainal Azman Abdul Aziz, the boy will now be detained at the pleasure of the Sultan of Pahang. This legal provision is typically applied when an individual is found to have committed a criminal act but is deemed not criminally responsible due to mental incapacity.
