Maldon & Tiptree FC Owners Face Court on Multiple Rape and Modern Slavery Charges
The owners of Maldon & Tiptree FC, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and his husband Scott, 32, have been remanded in custody after facing Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on multiple charges. The charges include rape, sexual assault, and modern slavery trafficking for sexual exploitation. Police arrested the couple on Wednesday and subsequently searched the football club as part of their investigation.
Defence barrister Oliver Snodin stated that the Drewitt-Barlows "strenuously denied" all allegations. The court was informed that the alleged offences occurred between 2013 and 2026. Prosecutor Serena Berry described the pair as "celebrities, who live multi-million lifestyles" with businesses both in Essex and internationally.
Berry detailed the allegations, stating, "It is alleged they have both targeted young males, they have recruited them, they have befriended them, they have groomed them. They have invited them to their home and other premises."
Investigations extended beyond the club, with police also searching the couple’s Southwood Chase home in Danbury and The Swan pub in Braintree, which Barrie Drewitt-Barlow owns. A Rolls-Royce was observed being removed from the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium in Maldon by trailer on Wednesday.
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, a property developer, gained prominence in 1999 as one of Britain's first gay fathers. He and Scott Drewitt-Barlow acquired Maldon & Tiptree in 2025, overseeing its promotion to tier seven of the English football pyramid and attracting notable players like Freddie Sears and manager Kevin Horlock. The couple is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on 5 June.
