Man Convicted of Stealing Cash from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's Farm
Imanuwela David has been convicted of housebreaking and theft after admitting to stealing a substantial amount of cash from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm in Limpopo province. The conviction is a key development in the ongoing 'Farmgate' scandal, which has seen Ramaphosa face an impeachment inquiry.
David, one of five individuals charged in connection with the 2020 incident, was apprehended after fleeing to Namibia. He confessed to breaking into the property and taking $580,000 hidden in furniture. According to court documents, David pleaded guilty to the charges, which also included conspiracy to commit housebreaking, theft, and money laundering.
The stolen funds were subsequently laundered through purchases of luxury vehicles and properties in South Africa. The scandal initially surfaced when former intelligence chief Arthur Fraser accused President Ramaphosa of covering up the theft, alleging that large sums of foreign currency were improperly concealed at the farm and that the President had failed to report the crime to the police. Ramaphosa has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
The Phala Phala incident has fuelled intense scrutiny of Ramaphosa's financial dealings and his administration's transparency. The parliamentary process to investigate the President's conduct remains a significant point of contention in South African politics, with critics pointing to the opaque nature of the funds and the handling of the subsequent investigation.
