Man Jailed for Culpable Homicide of Abused Wife
Lee Milne, 39, has been handed an eight-year prison sentence following his conviction for the culpable homicide of his wife, Kimberly Milne, 28. Mrs Milne tragically died in July 2023 after being struck by multiple vehicles on the A90 in Dundee, having jumped from a motorway bridge.
Milne was found guilty by a jury of culpable homicide and a separate charge of domestic abuse perpetrated across various properties in the city. This prosecution marks a significant moment in Scottish legal history, being the first of its kind where a perpetrator was held responsible for a death by suicide stemming from their abuse.
Details of Abuse and Death
Prosecutors detailed a harrowing 18-month period of significant domestic violence inflicted upon Kimberly by Milne. Evidence presented during the trial included instances of physical assault, such as choking and being dragged by her hair, and emotional manipulation. Kimberly had previously reported to police that Milne became violent after reviewing her phone, and another incident saw her knocked unconscious after he allegedly cheated on her.
On the night of her death, witnesses observed Milne acting aggressively towards Kimberly near Kingsway Retail Park, describing her as “cowering, scared” and “terrified of him”. CCTV footage corroborated this, showing Kimberly attempting to evade Milne's shouting and aggressive behaviour.
Milne’s own account to Kimberly’s mother the morning after her death claimed he chased her to the bridge, where she shook her head before jumping. Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kelly, who led the investigation, described Milne as a “violent bully who demonstrated emotional and physical violence… and coercive control,” adding that he “never fully accepted accountability for his actions.”
The court also heard that Milne had been placed on the sex offenders' register in 2024 for sexually assaulting two young boys, a conviction revealed after the trial concerning Kimberly's death.
