Myanmar Explosion Kills 55 in Shan State Village Controlled by Ta'ang National Liberation Army
An explosion in Kaung Tat, a village in Namkham Township, Shan State, near the Chinese border, has resulted in the deaths of at least 55 people and left dozens injured. The area is administered by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an insurgent group engaged in ongoing conflict with Myanmar's military junta.
A source familiar with the situation confirmed 25 women and 30 men perished in the incident. Rescue teams are currently working to extract individuals trapped beneath rubble. The TNLA stated that the explosion was caused by materials typically used in mining and quarrying operations.
Residents described widespread devastation and chaos immediately following the blast. Initial reports from locals suggested some believed the explosion to be an airstrike. Children are among the deceased, and hundreds of homes have sustained damage, affecting nearly an entire neighbourhood.
One resident recounted their narrow escape, noting, "By sheer luck, my phone saved my life. I was sitting in my bedroom eating noodles and looking at my phone. If I had been eating in the kitchen, I probably would not be alive today." This individual, who suffered a minor leg injury and had their home destroyed, detailed scenes of panic and profound grief, stating, "People were crying, calling out for their parents. It felt as if the world had come to an end."
The resident also questioned the rationale for operating a facility containing such explosives in close proximity to residential areas, demanding a comprehensive explanation from authorities to satisfy the victims' families.
