Nationwide Cashier Jailed 16 Months for Defrauding Vulnerable Customers
Kelly Kershaw, a 54-year-old former cashier at Nationwide’s Caernarfon branch, has been jailed for 16 months for stealing more than £8,600 from vulnerable customers. Kershaw defrauded clients, including a man with learning disabilities and an 85-year-old stroke victim, to finance lavish trips to destinations such as Africa, Paris, Tuscany, and Dubai. Her illicit activities came to light when colleagues observed her social media posts depicting these holidays.
Kershaw, from Nefyn, Gwynedd, admitted to five counts of fraud, perpetrated between December 2023 and October 2024. Caernarfon Crown Court heard how she targeted a 49-year-old man whose bank card was held at the branch for security following a prior fraud incident. In another instance, she processed a £500 withdrawal for an elderly stroke victim who had requested only £200, pocketing the difference.
An internal investigation commenced in October 2024, leading to Kershaw’s confrontation and subsequent confession. She reportedly described her victims as “easy targets who wouldn’t miss the money.” Defence barrister Amy Edwards stated that Kershaw developed a compulsive spending habit following a move to north Wales in 2020, attributing her actions to poor mental health.
Judge Timothy Petts, in sentencing, highlighted Kershaw’s deliberate targeting of vulnerable individuals and stated her motivation was “greed.” He emphasised the damage to public trust in financial institutions, concluding that immediate imprisonment was the only suitable recourse. Nationwide has since reimbursed all affected customers, with a July court hearing scheduled to determine Kershaw’s repayment obligations.
