Oxford United Apologises for United 93 Call Sign Shirt Advertisement
Oxford United Football Club has apologised for an advertisement promoting its new away kit that inadvertently displayed the call sign of United Airlines Flight 93, one of the aircraft hijacked during the 11 September 2001 attacks in the United States. The advertisement, posted on social media, depicted player Mark Harris wearing the kit, with the phrase "UNITED 93" printed above a link for kit purchases.
The club promptly removed the social media post once the error was identified. A spokesperson for Oxford United stated the club was "mortified" by the oversight, attributing it to a "terrible mistake" made by the club's media team.
United Airlines Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked aircraft on 9/11 not to reach its intended target, crashing into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control from the hijackers. The incident resulted in the deaths of all 44 people on board.
