Three Men Lose Appeal, Sentenced for Harassing Journalist Catrin Nye
Three individuals, Kristofer Deichler, Jatinder Kamra, and Sukhraj Singh, have failed in their legal challenges against convictions for harassing journalist Catrin Nye. Their appeals at Snaresbrook Crown Court were dismissed, confirming the initial sentences of community service and restraining orders.
The convictions stem from a targeted harassment campaign against Ms Nye after the release of her documentary, "A Very British Cult". The programme investigated the practices of the self-help organisation "Lighthouse International Group".
During the appeal, the court heard how Ms Nye was subjected to extensive online harassment, including a "barrage" of emails, social media posts, and attempts to contact her and her colleagues directly. The harassment extended to in-person incidents, with individuals linked to the group appearing at her workplace and making unsolicited deliveries to her home address.
District Judge Gill Jones, presiding over the initial trial at Westminster Magistrates' Court, described the actions as a "concerted effort to intimidate" Ms Nye, aiming to dissuade her from further reporting on the group. The judge highlighted the chilling effect such harassment has on journalistic integrity and freedom of the press.
Deichler, Kamra, and Singh were all found guilty of harassment without violence. Their sentences include unpaid work requirements and indefinite restraining orders prohibiting contact with Ms Nye or her family.
