Prime Minister Keir Starmer Condemns Elon Musk Over Henry Nowak Murder Commentary
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has publicly criticised tech magnate Elon Musk, alleging he is "trying to whip up division" concerning the killing of Henry Nowak. The 18-year-old's death has drawn scrutiny after footage emerged showing officers handcuffing him as he lay dying, despite his repeated assertions that he could not breathe. His killer, Vickrum Digwa, had claimed to be the victim of a racist assault.
Musk, owner of X, has repeatedly used the platform to castigate the police's handling of the teenager. Speaking in York, Sir Keir accused Musk of unwarranted interference in British domestic affairs, emphasising the Nowak family's plea for calm.
Sir Keir stated, "Musk, again, has been interfering in our politics in the last few days, trying to whip up division – that is not who we are in Britain." He described Britons as "reasonable, tolerant people" who, in tragic circumstances such as Nowak's, "react calmly, as his family have done."
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the officers' actions. Additionally, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) is reviewing its guidance on race following the incident. Sir Keir, when pressed on Conservative calls for a full misconduct investigation, affirmed that while changes may be necessary, it is crucial for politicians to exercise leadership and heed the family's request for calm, preventing the case from being exploited to sow discord.
