Prominent Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti Assaulted in Israeli Prisons
Marwan Barghouti, a highly prominent Palestinian leader, was subjected to three assaults by Israeli prison guards within the past month, his family has stated. His son, Arab Barghouti, relayed details from his father's Israeli lawyer, though the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) dismisses these claims as "false and baseless."
Details of the Assaults
Barghouti's lawyer, Ben Marmarelli, confirmed the incidents. Three weeks ago, guards at Megiddo Prison attacked Barghouti with a guard dog, followed by a beating during a transfer. A week ago, at Ganot Prison, Barghouti was severely beaten and left bleeding for over two hours, with a request for medical care reportedly denied.
The IPS maintains it is "not aware of any incidents as described" and asserts that "all inmates receive medical treatment in accordance with the professional judgement of medical officials."
Wider Concerns Regarding Prisoner Treatment
Since October 2023, UN bodies and Israeli human rights groups have documented a significant increase in the abuse of Palestinian prisoners. This includes routine beatings, sexual violence, starvation, and severe medical negligence, leading to dozens of reported deaths in detention. This aligns with a 2023 finding by the United Nations Committee against Torture, which expressed deep concern about a "de facto state policy of organised and widespread torture and ill-treatment" in Israeli jails. The IPS denies systemic abuse, stating individual misconduct is investigated.
Barghouti, who has been in solitary confinement for two-and-a-half years, has reportedly suffered severe beatings in the past, including broken ribs and head injuries.
Barghouti, convicted by an Israeli court for planning deadly attacks on Israeli civilians, is serving multiple life sentences. He remains the most popular Palestinian leader in opinion polls, with many viewing him as a unifying figure akin to Nelson Mandela.
