Russian Strikes Kill Four in Dnipro, Injure Dozens Across Ukraine Cities
Russian forces launched a significant overnight assault across Ukraine, leading to the deaths of at least four individuals in Dnipro, including a 73-year-old woman. Dozens more sustained injuries in Dnipro, Kyiv, and Kharkiv, according to local officials' early Tuesday statements.
Thousands sought refuge in Kyiv as prominent smoke plumes rose from the city's core. Air raid warnings were activated across most of Ukraine, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko urging residents to remain in shelters. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's City Military Administration, confirmed that "the enemy is striking with ballistic missiles."
Klitschko stated that two high-rise apartment buildings were struck, prompting concerns that individuals may be trapped beneath rubble. The assault on Kyiv in the early hours was marked by the audible buzz of drones and over a dozen loud explosions as impacts occurred. Reports also indicated blackouts and fires across the capital, with the full extent of damage still being assessed.
An industrial facility in Zaporizhzhia was also targeted. These attacks follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's warnings on Monday of a potential extensive Russian strike, advising residents to heed air raid alerts. Last week, Russia had declared its intent to target military and decision-making centres in Kyiv, urging foreigners to depart, in response to a drone strike in Russian-held Luhansk that reportedly killed 21 people. Ukraine's Armed Forces General Staff confirmed an attack near Starobilsk on 21-22 May, asserting it struck a Russian military unit.
