Semi-Professional Footballer Connor Charlton Jailed for 191mph Driving and Perverting Justice

Connor Charlton, 24, from Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. His conviction stems from an incident where he filmed himself driving a Mercedes C63 AMG at 191mph on the A19 in County Durham.

The footage, captured on a mobile phone, was discovered by Northumbria Police on Charlton's device following his arrest in July 2022 for an unrelated matter. The clip depicted Charlton explicitly stating his speed while driving at night.

Further investigation revealed Charlton had previously been issued a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) for a separate speeding offence on the A19 in April 2022. To avoid accountability, he instructed another individual to claim responsibility for this offence, thereby accumulating penalty points on their licence instead of his own. This action formed the basis of the perverting the course of justice charge.

Appearing before Newcastle Crown Court, Charlton received a 15-month custodial sentence. The court also imposed a 43-month driving disqualification, commencing upon his release from prison. During this period, Charlton will be required to pass an extended re-test to regain his driving licence.
