Six Family Members Dead in Iowa Domestic Shootings, Suspect Dies by Suicide
Six people were killed in Muscatine, Iowa, in a series of shootings that police have linked to a domestic dispute. The perpetrator, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, was subsequently found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as an "act of evil". Investigations suggest all victims were family members of McFarland. The shootings unfolded on Monday across multiple locations within the city.
Officers responded to a report of gunfire shortly after midday, discovering four individuals dead from gunshot wounds at a residence. McFarland had departed the scene before police arrived but was located soon after on a riverfront trail, where he was pronounced dead. Further inquiries led detectives to a different residence, where another man was found dead, followed by a sixth victim discovered deceased at a business address.
Police stated that preliminary findings indicate the events stemmed from a domestic dispute. While Chief Kies confirmed McFarland had a criminal record, no further details were immediately released, and the investigation remains ongoing. Muscatine, situated on the Mississippi River in southwest Iowa, has a population of approximately 23,500.
