Thirty-Five Dead as Ferry Catches Fire Near Baluk-Baluk Island, Philippines
A ferry fire near Baluk-Baluk Island in the southern Philippines has resulted in the deaths of 35 people, according to the Philippine Coast Guard. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, saw the M/V Lady Mary Joy 3 engulfed in flames while carrying 205 passengers and 35 crew members. At least 195 individuals have been rescued, but dozens remain unaccounted for.
Initial reports indicate the blaze began in an air-conditioned cabin. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu stated that access to the burnt-out sections of the vessel is being severely hindered by lingering heat and the presence of toxic fumes, making a comprehensive search operation arduous.
Survivors recounted that many passengers were compelled to jump into the sea to escape the fire. The majority of the deceased were found trapped in lower decks, having succumbed to the smoke and fire. One village chief was among those who died, with reports indicating he was instrumental in saving fellow passengers before perishing.
This latest maritime disaster underscores the persistent safety concerns within the Philippines' inter-island ferry system, which is a vital mode of transport across the archipelago. Overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, and lax enforcement of safety regulations have been cited as contributing factors in previous tragedies. The Philippines, a nation of over 7,000 islands, frequently experiences maritime accidents, often with significant loss of life.
