Three British Men Admit Killing Canadian Restaurant Owner Over Unpaid Bill Dispute
Three British men have admitted to their involvement in the killing of a restaurant owner in Owen Sound, Canada, stemming from a dispute over an unpaid bill in August 2023.
Robert Evans Jr, 25, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Sharif Rahman, 44, on Friday. His father, Robert Busby Evans, 49, and uncle, Barry Evans, 56, admitted to being accessories to the crime. Both older men have been sentenced to time already served and are now in the custody of the Canadian Border Agency for repatriation to the UK.
The three men, reportedly from Manchester, were extradited from Scotland last year. Evans Jr is scheduled for sentencing next month.
Rahman, a father-of-one, died a week after a physical altercation with the Evans family outside his curry house. The confrontation allegedly followed an argument concerning an unpaid bill of $150. Rahman was discovered in the street by a staff member and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in London, Ontario.
Canadian media outlets reported at the time that the three individuals were in the country on holiday visas and departed shortly after the incident. More than a year later, Evans Jr and his father were apprehended by Police Scotland in Edinburgh, while his uncle was arrested in Dalkeith.
All three men consented to extradition during separate hearings in October last year at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Defence counsel for Robert Busby Evans stated he believed it appropriate for the matters to be dealt with under the Canadian justice system. Lawyers for the two older family members had previously argued that Scots Law lacked an equivalent offence for being an accessory to the alleged crime, and thus extradition should have been refused.
