Trial Begins for Three Accused in Baja California Murders of Australian Surfers, US Friend
A Mexican court has commenced proceedings against three suspects accused of the aggravated homicide of two Australian brothers and their American companion. Jesús Gerardo, alias 'El Kekas', along with Ari Gisel and Cristian Alejandro, faced a judge in Ensenada, Baja California, after the men's bodies were recovered from a disused well last month.
The victims – Callum and Jake Robinson from Australia, and Jack Carter Rhoad from the United States – had been on a surfing expedition in the region. Prosecutors allege the trio were shot in the head after a dispute over the tyres of their pickup truck. The vehicle was later found burnt out.
The formal identification of the bodies was confirmed by the victims' parents, Debra and Martin Robinson, who travelled to Mexico. Jesús Gerardo, the primary suspect, has been formally charged with aggravated homicide. His companions, Ari Gisel and Cristian Alejandro, are charged with receiving stolen goods, with the possibility of further charges being brought as the investigation continues.
Baja California, despite its popularity with tourists, has a significant presence of organised crime and has experienced considerable violence. While the state frequently registers high homicide rates, incidents involving foreign tourists are less common.
