Trump Orders Cancellation of Freedom 250 Festival After Musicians Withdraw Over White House Affiliation
Donald Trump has ordered the cancellation of musical performances intended to celebrate the 250th anniversary of US independence, following the withdrawal of several high-profile artists. The artists cited concerns over the event’s affiliation with the White House and Mr. Trump’s administration, which established the organising body, Freedom 250, last year.
Artists Withdraw, Trump Reacts
As of Sunday, only a limited number of acts remained scheduled to perform, out of the nine initially announced. Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, and Bret Michaels have all pulled out. Young MC stated that artists were not informed of any “political involvement with the event,” while Ms. McBride claimed she was “presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading.”
In response, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, “Cancel it.” He disparaged the withdrawing artists as “overpriced” and “boring,” and indicated he is now considering replacing the planned festivities with a “Make America Great Again rally” on 24 June. He further suggested he would appear himself, claiming to be the “Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
Political Ties Undermine “Non-Partisan” Claims
Freedom 250, which launched the Great American State Fair concert series, was established by the Trump administration, with the president personally appointing its CEO. Despite the organisation’s claims of non-partisanship, the White House has publicly partnered with Freedom 250 for this “series of once-in-a-generation events.” The White House website explicitly states that a presidential task force created Freedom 250 “to achieve that ambitious mission” of a grand celebration.
Vanilla Ice and Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli are still scheduled to perform. Mr. Van Winkle defended his participation, stating on Instagram, “This is not a political platform. This is celebrating America’s birthday.” However, the voices behind Milli Vanilli’s music released a statement indicating they would not be performing.
Beyond the concert series, the White House is supporting other events organised by Freedom 250, including a UFC fight on its South Lawn and a Grand Prix race in Washington D.C., alongside the issuance of commemorative passports featuring a portrait of Mr. Trump.
