Two Protesters Killed in Nanyuki, Kenya, Over US Ebola Centre Plans
Two people were shot dead in Nanyuki, central Kenya, amidst demonstrations against US plans to establish an Ebola isolation centre at a local military base. One victim was reportedly shot near the Laikipia Airbase, where protests were taking place, and later died at a town hospital. The second individual was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, brought in by soldiers; both bodies reportedly displayed gunshot wounds.
Officials have not commented on the deaths, and a police spokesperson denied knowledge of any fatalities. Protests on Monday saw hundreds march through Nanyuki, blocking roads and burning tyres, met with police tear gas. A community leader identified one deceased as having been shot whilst returning home from his business.
The planned 50-bed isolation centre, intended to treat US citizens affected by the Democratic Republic of Congo Ebola outbreak, has provoked considerable public concern in Kenya regarding cross-border infection risks. Kenya has not recorded any Ebola cases.
Last Friday, the High Court halted the centre's opening following a legal challenge by a human rights organisation, which cited "grave and imminent risks" to public health. President William Ruto defended the plan on Monday, stating Kenya had "deployed every arsenal" to protect its citizens and that the facility was a "mutual agreement" with the US government, which had requested Kenyan support. He urged Kenyans not to "politicise" the matter. The High Court has since extended the suspension, demanding the government disclose details of the proposed facility. Military aircraft have been observed at the airbase, suggesting preparations continue despite the court order. Kenyan medical unions and watchdogs have opposed the centre, warning of exposure risks to local populations.
