
UK Landscape Gardeners Slow to Adopt Electric Tools Despite Noise, Emissions Benefits
The electrification of equipment within the UK landscape gardening industry is proceeding at a sluggish pace, with many professionals reluctant to abandon petrol-powered tools.
Noise and Emissions Reductions Unattained
Despite the demonstrable benefits of electric alternatives, including significantly reduced noise pollution and lower carbon emissions, widespread adoption remains elusive. Petrol leaf blowers, for example, can generate noise levels exceeding 100 decibels, posing health risks to operators and disrupting public spaces.
The Royal Parks charity has already implemented a ban on petrol leaf blowers across its London sites due to noise concerns, mandating the use of electric models. Similarly, the National Trust has committed to transitioning its gardening and land management teams to electric machinery by 2030, citing environmental imperatives.
Obstacles to Electrification
Industry surveys indicate that electric tools currently account for a mere 10% of equipment used by UK landscape gardeners. The primary deterrents to broader uptake include the higher upfront cost of electric tools, the limited duration and charging infrastructure for batteries, and a persistent perception that electric models lack the power of their internal combustion counterparts.
Manufacturers, however, contend that electric technology has advanced sufficiently to meet most professional demands, offering comparable power and efficiency for routine tasks. The economic realities for small businesses, often operating on tight margins, mean that the initial investment for a full suite of electric tools, potentially reaching £10,000 for a strimmer, hedge trimmer, and leaf blower with multiple batteries, presents a significant barrier.
