US Secret Service Investigates Gunfire Near White House Amid Heightened Security
Investigation Underway Near President's Residence
The US Secret Service is currently investigating reports of gunfire in the vicinity of the White House, specifically around Washington DC's Lafayette Park. Officers responded to the incident shortly after midnight local time (04:00 GMT) on Sunday morning, conducting a thorough search of the park and surrounding areas.
Despite the comprehensive search, no suspect has been apprehended, and there have been no reports of injuries. The agency, in collaboration with its partners, is actively seeking a possible vehicle and a person of interest in connection with the incident.
Heightened Security Posture Implemented
President Donald Trump was present in Washington DC throughout the weekend. While the Secret Service has confirmed that operations at the White House are proceeding normally, a "heightened security posture is in place" as a precautionary measure. Roads in the affected area, which were initially closed for the investigation, have since been reopened.
A representative for the Secret Service confirmed on Sunday evening that "the investigation continues". President Trump remained in the capital over the Easter weekend, rather than travelling to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. White House communications director Steven Cheung stated on Saturday that the President had been "working nonstop in the White House and Oval Office" during this period.
