Virgin Seeks Approval for Up to 20 Daily Channel Tunnel Rail Journeys to Europe
Virgin Group has commenced the formal process to establish a new railway service connecting the UK with Europe via the Channel Tunnel. The company submitted an application to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on 17 May for a licence to operate passenger services. This strategic move signals Virgin's intent to re-enter the European passenger rail market.
The application details plans for up to 20 daily return journeys through the Channel Tunnel, reflecting a significant proposed expansion of current services. For this ambitious project to proceed, Virgin must secure further approvals from regulatory bodies in both France and Belgium to gain access to their respective rail networks.
This development comes as the UK Government consistently promotes increased competition across various sectors, including cross-border transport. While Virgin's submission to the ORR is a crucial first step, the subsequent approval processes in continental Europe will determine the viability and timeline of these proposed services.
