Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth Demands New Westminster Relationship After Starmer Resigns
Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has demanded a “new relationship” between the Welsh Government and Westminster, following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation. Mr ap Iorwerth outlined a series of requirements for the incoming Prime Minister, including greater powers for Wales, asserting that political instability in UK central government had impeded his administration’s ability to engage effectively.
Sir Keir, who announced his continued tenure until a new Labour leader is selected in September, was praised by interim Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates for having “brought our party back from oblivion.” However, Reform’s Welsh leader Dan Thomas insisted on an immediate general election, stating, “The public must decide who governs the country, not Labour members.”
After Plaid Cymru, led by Mr ap Iorwerth, surpassed Welsh Labour in the Senedd election in May, Sir Keir had promised a June meeting with the First Ministers of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, which did not occur.
Post-resignation, Mr ap Iorwerth stated his “disappointment” that Welsh government engagement had been “hampered by the turmoil in Westminster.” He elaborated, “I would like to see his successor recognising that Wales needs a new relationship with Westminster, with a focus on greater powers, fair funding, and respect for the democratic mandate delivered by the people of Wales.”
Former First Minister Mark Drakeford voiced support for Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to become Prime Minister, citing his “ability to persuade people in this country to have some hope again.”
