Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth Discusses Devolved Spending Powers with Andy Burnham
First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has indicated that securing greater spending powers for Wales is now a question of implementation, following a meeting with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. The discussions focused on how Wales could gain more direct control over its financial affairs, drawing parallels with the devolution arrangements in Greater Manchester.
Mr ap Iorwerth stressed that the dialogue has shifted from whether Wales will receive these powers to precisely how and when they will be enacted. This approach seeks to establish a more robust financial framework, enabling the Welsh Government to better address specific national priorities without relying solely on central Westminster allocations.
The Welsh Government has consistently argued for greater fiscal autonomy to enhance its capacity for public service delivery and economic development. The meeting with Mr Burnham signals a deliberate effort to learn from existing devolution models within the UK and apply relevant aspects to the Welsh context, aiming to secure a more direct and efficient control over public funds.
