White House Correspondents' Dinner Rescheduled for July 24 After April Shooting Incident
The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, originally halted after a shooting incident on April 25, has been rescheduled for July 24. The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) confirmed the new date, stating the event at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington DC will implement "significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures."
US President Donald Trump is set to attend the rearranged dinner. During the April incident, Trump and Vice-President JD Vance were among those quickly moved from the stage by Secret Service agents when a suspect attempted to breach security, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The Department of Justice reported one Secret Service agent sustained injuries from shotgun fire.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Following the original event's disruption, President Trump commented on social media that rescheduling the dinner, which honours journalists, was a "sign of Strength and Fortitude," asserting that "we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life."
The WHCA has raised funds to ensure members who purchased tickets for the April gathering do not incur additional costs for the July event, described as a "more intimate gathering." Financial support is also being extended to scholarship winners for their travel to Washington DC.
