UK Biobank Suspends Data Access After 500,000 Participant Records Listed on Alibaba
UK Biobank has temporarily suspended global access to its research platform following the discovery that de-identified medical data for 500,000 participants was listed for sale on the Chinese e-commerce site Alibaba. The incident, attributed by Biobank chief Professor Sir Rory Collins to "a few bad apples" at three academic institutions, prompted a swift removal of listings before any data was sold. However, the event has triggered an investigation and scrutiny over data security protocols for sensitive health information.
