Ian Huntley Attacked, Seven Prisoners Murdered in England and Wales Prisons During 2025
Recent data from the Ministry of Justice shows a rise in serious assaults and murders within England and Wales prisons, with seven prisoners killed in 2025. Convicted murderer Ian Huntley died after an attack at HMP Frankland, and Ian Watkins, the former Lostprophets singer, also died following an assault in HMP Wakefield in October 2025. These incidents highlight systemic issues of violence, overcrowding, and a perceived lack of consequences for inmates already serving lengthy sentences, with prison officer numbers also declining.
