Belfast Harland & Wolff Cranes Undergo Major Upgrade for Defence Contract Work
The two 'Goliath' cranes at Belfast's Harland & Wolff shipyard, landmark fixtures of the city's industrial skyline, are currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. This extensive maintenance programme, involving the dismantling and refurbishment of key components, is a precursor to the shipyard's anticipated role in a major UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract.
Navantia, the Spanish state-owned defence giant and current owner of Harland & Wolff, is investing close to £100 million into the facility's modernisation. This substantial capital injection aims to enhance the shipyard's capacity and technological capabilities, positioning it favourably for future defence projects.
The MoD contract in question pertains to the construction of Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships for the Royal Navy. While precise details of Harland & Wolff's involvement remain subject to final confirmation, the ongoing investment signals a clear intent to secure a significant share of this lucrative government work, vital for sustaining UK industrial capacity and securing Western naval power projection.
