Government Commits £11 Million to Clear Three Major Illegal Waste Dumps in England
The government has announced an £11 million investment to tackle three of England's most significant illegal waste sites. These dumps, located in Kent, Surrey, and West Yorkshire, collectively contain an estimated 22,000 tonnes of illegally deposited waste, posing considerable environmental and health risks.
Environment Minister Robbie Moore stated that these clean-up operations are projected to be completed by Spring 2025. The initiative targets locations that have long been sources of concern for local communities and environmental agencies.
The specific sites designated for intervention include:
- Sandhill, Fawkham, Kent: This site is reported to contain approximately 10,000 tonnes of waste.
- Burslem Road, South Godstone, Surrey: Around 7,000 tonnes of illegally dumped material are present here.
- New Mill, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire: An estimated 5,000 tonnes of waste requires removal from this location.
Illegal waste dumping continues to be a persistent issue across the UK, with authorities frequently struggling to manage the scale and cost of remediation. Critics argue that insufficient enforcement and penalties have allowed such large-scale operations to proliferate, leading to significant taxpayer expense for rectification.
