Tom Parnaby, 18, Calls for Firework Sales Ban After Bonfire Night Blindness
Tom Parnaby, an 18-year-old from Sheffield, is urging the government to prohibit the public sale of fireworks after an incident last Bonfire Night left him permanently blind in one eye. Mr Parnaby, who was celebrating with friends, described the moment a single firework exploded prematurely, causing catastrophic injuries to himself and a friend.
The incident occurred when a firework, purchased from a supermarket, detonated immediately after being lit. Mr Parnaby sustained significant facial injuries, including the loss of sight in his left eye. His friend also suffered severe hand injuries, requiring multiple surgical procedures.
Mr Parnaby stated that the experience has profoundly altered his life, impacting his independence and future prospects. He emphasised that the readily available nature of such dangerous pyrotechnics to the general public poses an unacceptable risk.
Campaigners have long highlighted the dangers associated with unsupervised firework use, advocating for stricter regulations or a complete ban on sales to individuals. They argue that fireworks should only be used by licensed professionals in organised displays, thereby minimising public harm. The government has previously resisted such measures, citing personal freedoms and established traditions.
