Green Party Candidate Sarah Wakefield Outlines Vision for Makerfield By-Election
Sarah Wakefield, representing the Green Party in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, has articulated a platform focused on addressing local grievances and national frustrations. Speaking ahead of the 18 June poll, Ms Wakefield emphasised the need for a political approach that offers optimism and tangible solutions for constituents.
Local and National Concerns
Ms Wakefield acknowledged the widespread disillusionment with current political discourse, stating that many feel “frustrated, unheard and frankly annoyed” by national issues. She highlighted specific local problems in Makerfield, including persistent flooding in areas such as Abram and Platt Bridge, the ongoing development of greenbelt land, and the deterioration of community assets.
“The people of the constituency of Makerfield deserve to have their community assets looked after properly,” Ms Wakefield asserted, adding that national political conversations often fail to consider the realities faced by people on the ground.
Policy Stances
On immigration, Ms Wakefield outlined the Green Party’s policy of welcoming individuals who can contribute, arguing that the nation’s diversity is a fundamental strength. Regarding the party’s environmental mandate, she affirmed that “At the heart of everything we do, we put planet and our communities as our foundation. You cannot have justice for the planet and nature without putting it hand in hand with social justice.”
Addressing drug policy, Ms Wakefield advocated for a public health-first approach, proposing a highly regulated system for the legalisation of drugs. This, she argued, would ensure individuals with addiction receive appropriate professional support and care within a controlled framework.
