Makerfield By-Election Candidate Jake Austin Pledges Liberal Democrats Will Deliver Cost-of-Living Savings
Jake Austin, the Liberal Democrat candidate contesting the Makerfield by-election, has asserted that his party possesses the means to "deliver actual savings" for households struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. Austin described the issue of rising prices as a pervasive concern for constituents.
The Wigan-born councillor, who also represents Hazel Grove in Stockport, pointed to a recently unveiled Liberal Democrat plan designed to halve energy bills, should the party assume power. This proposal is framed as a direct response to the economic pressures facing the electorate.
Regarding immigration, Austin acknowledged its benefits to the community, noting the significant contribution of immigrants to the National Health Service. While advocating for necessary controls, he emphasised the importance of welcoming individuals who contribute to society.
In Makerfield, an area with a strong Brexit vote, Austin addressed the issue of EU relations. He maintained that the public is not interested in revisiting the 2016 referendum, but rather in tangible reductions to living costs. Austin highlighted a recent Liberal Democrat amendment to the King's Speech, which sought to establish a customs union with the European Union, projected to inject an additional £25bn into the economy.
Austin expressed frustration with both the Labour and Reform parties, accusing them of "taking voters for a ride." He specifically criticised Andy Burnham, suggesting his actions were part of a bid for the Labour leadership and ultimately, the Prime Ministership. Austin also condemned the Reform party for allegedly fostering "hate and division," arguing that people deserve a "proper Liberal Democrat alternative" to normalise politics.
