Henry Nowak Murder: Prime Minister Meets Family, Pledges Action After Police Misconduct
Sir Keir Starmer stated he was "profoundly humbled" to meet Henry Nowak's family in Downing Street on Thursday, committing to preventing similar devastating losses. The Prime Minister acknowledged there are "difficult questions that need to be answered about the way the police handled Henry's murder."
Footage from the night of the incident shows Nowak telling officers he had been stabbed, with one officer dismissing his claim. Vickrum Digwa, 23, received a life sentence with a minimum of 21 years for Nowak's murder.
After the private meeting with Nowak's father Mark Nowak, mother Lucy Ross, and stepmother Katie Woodcock, Sir Keir spoke of Henry's "kindness, his warmth, and his love of football," lamenting a bright future "cruelly stolen from him in appalling circumstances." He reiterated his commitment to an unflinching pursuit of justice and learning lessons from the case. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating Hampshire Constabulary's actions.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also met the Nowak family, supporting their call for cross-party and interfaith cooperation to rebuild trust in the police. Badenoch urged a review of religious practices or exemptions that permit carrying dangerous weapons in public, referencing the ceremonial knife Digwa claimed to carry as part of his Sikh faith.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced he would also meet the family. Separately, Sir Keir criticised Elon Musk for comments on social media platform X regarding the case, accusing him of attempting to "whip up division."
The US State Department also weighed in on X, commenting on "ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing" as symptoms of "civilizational decline" that "must be rejected across the West," while offering condolences to the Nowak family and the UK. Sir Keir rejected Farage's earlier claim of a "two-tier" policing system in the UK. Protests in Southampton earlier this week related to the case resulted in 11 police officers sustaining injuries.
