Kenya Prosecutors Charge Eight Utumishi Girls' School Students with Murder Over Dormitory Fire
Eight students from Utumishi Girls' School in Kenya have been charged with murder in connection with a dormitory fire last month. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 16 pupils. Prosecutors informed the Nakuru High Court that sufficient evidence exists to proceed with the murder charges.
Court Proceedings and Remand
The students, all aged between 15 and 18, appeared in court where the charges were formally presented. They have been remanded to juvenile detention facilities ahead of further legal proceedings. The specific details surrounding the cause of the fire and the alleged involvement of the students have not been fully disclosed at this stage.
This incident has drawn considerable attention to safety protocols within Kenyan boarding schools, particularly regarding dormitory conditions and supervision. Previous similar tragedies have prompted calls for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent future losses of life.
