Kevin Sinfield Knighted, Authors Malorie Blackman and Julia Donaldson Made Dames in King's Honours
Rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield has been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, primarily in recognition of his extensive charitable work. Sinfield has raised millions of pounds for organisations tackling motor neurone disease (MND) following his former teammate Rob Burrow's diagnosis in 2019.
Children's authors Malorie Blackman and Julia Donaldson have both been made Dames for their services to literature. Donaldson is renowned for works such as 'The Gruffalo', while Blackman is celebrated for her 'Noughts & Crosses' series. Both authors' works have seen screen adaptations.
Several members of the Euro 2025-winning Lionesses squad, including Chloe Kelly who scored the decisive penalty, have been appointed MBEs. Cosmetic entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury receives a CBE, and veteran actress Dame Helen Mirren and photojournalist Sir Don McCullin join the exclusive Companions of Honour.
Community and Arts Contributions Recognised
The honours list also highlights significant community work. Deborah Lewis and Constance McCready, who established support groups for families bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic, are appointed MBEs. Their efforts reflect the majority of awards given for local community and charitable service.
In the arts, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, co-founders of Aardman Animations, the studio behind 'Wallace & Gromit' and 'Chicken Run', have been knighted. Broadcaster Anneka Rice and singer Cerys Matthews also receive honours. Patrick Vernon is knighted for his work on racial equality, notably leading the campaign for Windrush Day.
Sir Kevin Sinfield, who achieved the highest points total in Super League history, expressed profound humility regarding his knighthood. He stated, "I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive this award on behalf of the rugby and MND communities." Sinfield's fundraising efforts, which included pushing Rob Burrow in a wheelchair during a marathon, garnered over £11 million. Lindsey Burrow, Rob Burrow's widow, praised Sinfield's dedication to the MND community.
Other sporting figures recognised include golfer Luke Donald and rugby union player Emily Scarratt, both appointed OBEs. Industrial designer Ron Arad and fashion designer David Emanuel, who created Princess Diana's wedding dress, are also among the recipients. Political figures, including former Labour MP Chris Mullin, are also acknowledged for public service.
