Man Charged Over Disorder at Belfast Football Match
Charges Filed After Windsor Park Disorder
A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with public disorder that erupted in south Belfast on Friday, preceding the Irish Cup semi-final at Windsor Park. The incident, which saw nine police officers sustain injuries and a child struck by a bottle, occurred during an approved public procession involving approximately 250 individuals.
The man faces charges including riotous behaviour, doing a provocative act, possession of fireworks/flares at a regulated match, indecent behaviour, and attempted criminal damage. He is scheduled to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Friday, 1st May.
Police Condemn 'Provocative Conduct'
Whilst acknowledging that most participants in the procession behaved peacefully, police reported observing "provocative conduct and the heavy use of pyrotechnics and fireworks" despite prior warnings. The disorder also involved the throwing of flares, fireworks, and bottles.
The Parades Commission had imposed specific conditions on the procession, which was organised by a group of Cliftonville supporters, before it was permitted to proceed.
