Muhammed Secka, 16, Drowned in Rother Valley Lake, Inquest Hears Cannot Swim
Muhammed Secka, aged 16, who lost his life in a lake during the recent heatwave, could not swim, an inquest has revealed. Emergency services were summoned to Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire on a Bank Holiday Monday after he encountered difficulties in the water.
His body was located the following day. Doncaster Coroner's Court heard initial findings from a post-mortem examination indicated "features in keeping with drowning." The senior coroner, Nicola Mundy, emphasised this conclusion remains provisional pending further investigation.
Coroner's officer Siobhan Golightly informed the court that Muhammed attended the country park with friends on 25 May. "At approximately 19:00 BST, he had been in the water with friends when he disappeared from view," Golightly stated. The alarm was raised, and emergency services were contacted. Muhammed's body was recovered in the early hours of the subsequent day, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. "It's reported that Muhammed was not able to swim," Golightly confirmed.
Muhammed Secka is one of at least 17 individuals who have drowned in open water during the recent period of elevated temperatures. Online fundraising campaigns were initiated by friends and family following his death. One organiser described him as "a much-loved son, friend, student and member of the community who brought light, laughter and kindness to those around him."
The inquest into Muhammed's death has been opened and adjourned to a future date.
