Nicola Sturgeon Expresses Betrayal Over Peter Murrell's SNP Embezzlement Conviction
Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister, has publicly addressed the embezzlement conviction of her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, stating she is "coming to terms with being married to someone she did not know." Speaking at a book festival in County Kerry, Ireland, Ms Sturgeon declared she had been "deceived, betrayed and lied to" by the Scottish National Party's former chief executive.
Mr Murrell pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to embezzling £400,310.65 from the SNP between August 2010 and October 2022. The funds were reportedly used for luxury items, including jewellery, two cars, and a motorhome. Mr Murrell remains in custody, with sentencing scheduled for 23 June.
Ms Sturgeon, who was questioned as part of the police investigation but not charged, reiterated her lack of knowledge regarding Mr Murrell's actions. She stated, "people point the finger at me for someone else's crimes," despite being cleared. Ms Sturgeon attributed her failure to question the source of luxury goods in their home to both her and Mr Murrell being high earners.
First Minister John Swinney has dismissed calls for a Holyrood inquiry into the matter, citing a five-year "forensic" police investigation, Operation Branchform, as sufficient. Mr Swinney expressed his "appalled" reaction to Mr Murrell's conduct.
Campbell Gunn, a former adviser, claimed that Alex Salmond had previously cautioned Ms Sturgeon regarding Mr Murrell's position as chief executive being "untenable" whilst she led the party. Mr Gunn suggested that ignoring this advice contributed to subsequent party issues.
